The most common question before a booking isn't "Is the villa free?" but "Can we swim in May?". Here are the figures for Split, month by month, and what it actually feels like on the ground. Kaštel Stari is on the same bay, so the numbers apply to us almost exactly.
The figures at a glance
Long-term averages for Split, rounded. Individual years vary; July can also bring two weeks of 35 degrees.

Spring: April to June
In April it's often T-shirt weather by day, but you'll want a jacket in the evening. At around 15 degrees the sea is for the brave. May gets noticeably warmer, and by late May the first guests are swimming in the sea. June is one of our favourite months: warm, long evenings, the sea above 20 degrees, and the beaches not yet full.
Our pools are heated from April to October. In April and May especially, that's the difference between looking at the pool and using it. More in Heated pool in the shoulder season.
Summer: July and August
Hot and dry, often above 30 degrees, rarely below 22 at night. Hardly any rain, at most a short thunderstorm. The sea is bath-warm.
Around midday most of our guests stay in the shade by the pool, or inside with the air conditioning on. Do trips early in the morning and the beach in the late afternoon.
Autumn: September and October
September is what many people picture as summer: warm but not oppressive, the sea still above 22 degrees. There may be a day or two of rain, and it usually clears straight after.
October is quieter. Often still 20 degrees by day, the sea around 20 too, which many people still find fine for swimming. Evenings get cool, and the jugo, a humid southerly wind, sometimes brings a few grey days.
Winter: November to March
November is the wettest month. After that it's mild but not warm: around 11 to 14 degrees by day and chilly at night. When the bura blows, the cold wind off the mountains, the sky is bright blue but the wind is biting. Snow on the coast is rare.
In winter the main pool rests. The hot tub can be heated on request. For long stays and New Year we have separate pages: winter and New Year in the villa and long stays.
Our recommendation
- Swimming in the sea: mid-June to the end of September
