The best time for a villa holiday in Kastel Stari – a season guide

Kastel Stari lies picturesquely on the Adriatic coast between Trogir and Split and is one of Dalmatia's best-hidden gems. When is the best time to visit this coastal town depends entirely on your personal preferences, your budget and the kind of activities you're looking for. While many people automatically think of the hot summer months, Croatia has something to offer all year round – from relaxed winter stays and blossom-filled spring visits to lively summer holidays and beautiful autumn days.

Spring in Kastel Stari (April to June): the secret favourite

The spring climate

For many, spring is the most underrated season in Croatia. With average daytime temperatures between 15 and 23 degrees Celsius in April, rising to 27 degrees in June, spring offers a pleasant, balanced climate. The nights are still cool – between 8 and 12 degrees in April – which is perfect for restful sleep, while the days get steadily warmer.

The weather is mostly sunny to partly cloudy, with the occasional shower – but these are usually short and rare. The sea temperature rises gradually from about 15 degrees in April to 22 degrees in June. While an April dip may be reserved for the brave, June is already much friendlier for swimmers.

Why spring is a smart choice

The biggest advantage of spring is the peace and emptiness. During the summer high season, Kastel Stari and the whole coast are flooded with tourists. In spring, by contrast, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches – such as the Kaštel Stari seafront promenade (lungomare) with its shady pines and tamarisks – without the crowds. Villa rental prices are much lower than in summer, often 30–50% cheaper.

This is also the ideal time for activities such as hiking, cycling and sightseeing. The temperatures are perfect for exploring the medieval lanes of Trogir (just 15 km away), the UNESCO World Heritage Site with its St Lawrence Cathedral and the impressive 15th-century clock tower. The Krka waterfalls are also a wonderful destination – the nearby ruins of Salona and the historic city of Split are easy to reach.

Spring activities

  • Hikes through the Dalmatian countryside without the summer heat
  • Cycling along the coast and through the countryside
  • Cultural exploration in Trogir, Split and the ruins of Salona
  • Birdwatching – spring is the best season for this hobby
  • Relaxed beach days and first swims from June
  • Boat trips to islands such as Šolta with the famous Blue Lagoon

What to bring

Pack light clothing you can layer – T-shirts, light shirts, a denim jacket or jumper for cooler evenings, comfortable walking shoes and a light rain jacket. Sun protection is necessary in spring too, especially if you're outdoors a lot.

Summer in Kastel Stari (July to August): the classic high season

The summer climate

Summer is without doubt the hottest and sunniest season in Croatia. Average temperatures are between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, with Split and the coastal region averaging 28–29 degrees. Heatwaves can push temperatures above 32 degrees. Humidity is around 60–70%, and there are about 10–12 hours of sunshine a day.

Rainfall is minimal – usually only 5–10 mm per month. The sea temperature is perfect for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts: in July and August the Adriatic reaches about 24–25 degrees, ideal for long swimming adventures.

The character of the summer season

Summer is the most popular time to travel in Croatia – and for good reason. The weather is practically guaranteed to be perfect. All restaurants, cafés, beaches and attractions are open. Cultural life is lively, with music festivals, theatre, concerts and local events.

However, this popularity also has drawbacks: the beaches are full, restaurants are at capacity and room prices reach their peak. Kastel Stari is swamped with tourists, and a large villa that costs 1,500 euros a week can easily cost double that in July/August. The main roads and popular spots can feel overwhelming.

Summer activities

  • Swimming fun and water sports – snorkelling, diving, sailing
  • Boat trips to the islands (Blue Lagoon on Drvenik Veli, the Pakleni Islands, Hvar)
  • Festivals and cultural events
  • Beach clubs and nightlife
  • Relaxed days on the beach and aperitifs with a sea view
  • Exploring Trogir Old Town at sunset

The other side of summer

The intense heat can be tiring. Many people limit themselves to the beach or air conditioning during the day and save more active discoveries for the morning or evening hours. July/August is less suitable for hikers and active holidaymakers – hiking in the heat is exhausting, and popular attractions such as the Krka waterfalls are overrun with hundreds of other tourists.

What to bring

Light, loose clothing, high-quality sun cream (minimum SPF 50), good sunglasses, a hat or cap, light sandals, a bathrobe and plenty of drinking water. Note that UV radiation in the Mediterranean is very intense.

Autumn in Kastel Stari (September to October): the underrated highlight

The autumn climate

For many, autumn is the best season in Croatia, and rightly so. September starts with an average of about 24 degrees on the coast and cools to about 20 degrees by October – still warm, but not oppressively hot. The days are still long (about 11 hours of sunshine in October), and humidity is a comfortable 65–75%.

The sea temperature is ideal in September – about 23 degrees. That is one of the best swimming experiences of the year: the water has been warmed by the sun all summer and stays pleasantly warm, without the air temperature being oppressively hot. Even in October the water temperature is still around 20 degrees – perfectly swimmable for the brave.

Why autumn is the "late summer"

Autumn combines the best of both worlds: you still get the summer feeling, but with far fewer tourists and at more moderate prices. The beaches are quieter, restaurants aren't overrun, and villa prices fall back from the summer peaks to reasonable levels – about 20–30% below the high-summer rate.

The weather is relatively stable, although there may be the occasional rainy day (on average 9–12 days of rain in October). These short spells of rain are no big problem, though – they take the edge off the heat and bring the landscape to life.

Autumn activities

  • Hiking and cycling – perfect temperatures without the summer heat
  • Boat trips and sailing – the best conditions for a sailing charter
  • Exploring the national parks: Plitvice Lakes and the Krka waterfalls with breathtaking autumn colours
  • Dolphin watching (September/October are known for dolphins appearing more often in the Adriatic)
  • Coastal walks – the Makarska Riviera, Opatija and Rovinj are perfect
  • Cycling through Istria with its golden vineyards
  • Cultural activities and sightseeing without the crowds

A special autumn tip

Some of the best conditions for longer stays arise in autumn. Digital nomads and remote workers often find the perfect balance: great weather, a stable internet connection in Kastel Stari and the nearby Split region, lower living costs and still plenty of sunshine to enjoy. The coworking spaces in Split (such as Re.Split) offer good infrastructure, and the cafés in the region offer reliable Wi-Fi for productive work.

What to bring

Similar to spring – layers, light outerwear, comfortable shoes, a light rain jacket for occasional showers and sun protection. In October a slightly warmer jacket is advisable.

Winter in Kastel Stari (December to February): a surprising gem

The winter climate

Winter in Croatia is not what you might expect. While inland areas and the north (such as Zagreb) can have real winter conditions with snow and temperatures below 0 degrees, the coastal region of Kastel Stari and the Adriatic area is much milder. Average temperatures are between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius, with occasional sunny days that can reach 15 degrees.

December can be surprisingly sunny – reports from locals and visitors show that it is possible to have 14 days of sunshine in a row at around 15 degrees. That is not the average, but it gives you a sense of what is possible. Rainfall is, of course, higher than in other seasons, and there are occasional cloudy days or short showers.

A new perspective on winter

Winter in Kastel Stari and the Split-Dalmatia region was long underrated as a "travel season". However, this perception is changing as more and more people discover winter as an ideal season – especially for certain groups.

Winter for remote workers and digital nomads

Winter is exceptionally attractive for remote workers and digital nomads. Why? Several reasons: first, there is a growing community of expats and digital nomads in the region. Split, only 20 km away, has established coworking spaces, cafés with stable Wi-Fi and meetup groups. Second, winter is perfect for longer stays – villas are extraordinarily affordable (often 40–60% below summer rates), which makes longer rental agreements very attractive.

Third, the peace and quiet of the winter months is ideal for focused work. The beaches are empty, the restaurants are more relaxed, and there are fewer distractions. For anyone who wants to work for several weeks or even months while living in beautiful surroundings, winter in Kastel Stari is ideal.

Winter for relaxed holidays

Winter also suits couples or families who want a relaxed, less touristy holiday. While you won't be jumping into the sea (the water temperature is about 13–15 degrees), there are alternative activities: hiking, discovering local history (Trogir has no bad weather for sightseeing), reading and relaxing, enjoying local food and wine, and long walks on the beach under more dramatic skies.

Winter activities

  • Remote work from a beautiful villa with a sea view
  • Long walks on quiet beaches and along the lungomare
  • Cultural exploration in Trogir and Split (no crowds, no queues)
  • Enjoying local food and wine in family-run taverns
  • Hikes in the hills and the surrounding countryside
  • Christmas markets and festivities in the run-up to Christmas
  • Reading, writing and creative work in peaceful surroundings
  • Birdwatching – winter brings different migratory species

What to bring

A good winter jacket, layers of clothing, comfortable shoes for hikes, a scarf or hat for colder days and, if necessary, an umbrella. Don't forget sun cream – UV protection makes sense even on cloudy winter days.

Getting to your villa in Kastel Stari

By plane

The nearest international airport is Split Airport (SPU, only about 10 minutes by car from our villas). There are several ways to get from there to your villa:

  • Airport bus: the Croatia Airlines bus runs directly from the terminal to Split bus station (about 30–40 minutes, around 10 euros). Local buses (line 38) also go directly to Kastel Stari (about 15–20 minutes, around 3 euros).
  • Taxi or transfer: a taxi from the airport to Kastel Stari costs about 30–35 euros. Private transfer services can be booked via various platforms.
  • Hire car: hire cars are also available at the airport and give you full flexibility for day trips.

By train or car

If you're travelling from elsewhere in Europe, driving is also an option. There is a rail connection to Split, but it is limited. Driving through southern Europe (especially from Germany, Austria or Switzerland) lets you travel at your own pace and sightsee along the way.

Arriving by boat

For the ultimate arrival, sailing enthusiasts can also arrive in Kastel Stari or nearby Split on charter boats or private yachts. This is a great option for sailing fans.

Which season is really the best?

The answer depends entirely on you. There is no universal "best" season – there is only the best season for you.

Choose spring or autumn if you want to combine activity, pleasant weather, lower prices and quiet. These are arguably the best seasons for most visitors.

Choose summer if swimming fun, lively nightlife, cultural events and guaranteed weather are your priority – and if cost is not a big concern.

Choose winter if you want to stay longer, plan to work remotely, are looking for absolute calm and authenticity, or simply want a budget adventure with plenty of time to explore.

Practical travel tips

Book your villa in advance: autumn is especially popular and can book up quickly. Summer requires a long lead time. Spring and winter are more flexible.

Pack smart: layers work in every season in Croatia – you can add or remove layers as needed.

Explore on day trips: whatever the season, you should plan day trips to Trogir (only 15 km), Split (20 km), the Krka waterfalls, Šibenik or the islands of the Adriatic.

Make use of the infrastructure: Kastel Stari is perfectly positioned between touristy Split and charming Trogir – it gives you the best of both worlds, whenever you travel.

Conclusion: your perfect season awaits

Kastel Stari is truly a destination worth visiting all year round. The key is knowing what you expect from your visit. Do you dream of quiet beaches and budget-friendly villas? Spring or winter are ideal. Do you want classic Mediterranean beach life with festivals and plenty of energy? Summer is for you. Are you looking for the golden mean with fewer tourists, good weather and moderate prices? Autumn is unbeatable.

Whatever your choice – Kastel Stari, with its crystal-clear water, rich history, friendly people and breathtaking coastal beauty, won't disappoint you. The best season is the one in which your dreams of a villa holiday in Croatia come true.
