If you stay with us, one of the series' best-known locations is almost on the doorstep. The Kaštilac in Kaštel Gomilica was the Braavos waterfront in season 5. From Kaštel Stari it's a short drive, or a longer walk along the seafront promenade.
Everyone knows Dubrovnik as King's Landing. Fewer people know that much of Essos was filmed around Split. These are the places you can easily combine in a day or two from our villas.
Kaštel Gomilica: Braavos (season 5)
The little fortress sits on a rock just off the shore, reached by a stone bridge. Benedictine nuns built it in the 16th century as protection against the Ottomans. In the series, this is where Arya's ship docks when she arrives in Braavos.
Our tip: go early in the morning. You'll usually have it to yourself, the light comes in from the sea, and afterwards you can get a coffee at one of the cafés by the harbour.
Diocletian's Palace, Split: the throne room (season 4)
Daenerys holds court in the vaulted cellars beneath the palace, and this is also where she chains up her dragons. The cellars are a museum with an entry fee; the passage towards the harbour is free. It's about 20 minutes by car from us, and the train from Kaštel Stari station is just as quick, with no hunting for a parking space.
There's more on the old town in our article Split in a day.
Klis Fortress: Meereen (season 4)
Klis guards the pass between the coast and the hinterland, about 25 minutes from Kaštel Stari. In the series it's Meereen, the slaver city Daenerys takes. The climb inside the walls is steep and hard work in the midday heat. Late afternoon is more pleasant, and that's when the view over the Bay of Kaštela to Split looks best.
Žrnovnica: the mill by the river (season 4)
In the village of Žrnovnica, a little over half an hour from us, stands the old water mill where Missandei bathes while Grey Worm watches. Battle scenes outside the gates of Meereen were also shot nearby. It's a quiet village, not a tourist spot, so keep the noise down and don't park on private land.
Trogir: Qarth (season 2)
Scenes set in Qarth were filmed in the cloister of the Dominican monastery in Trogir. Trogir is worth an evening anyway, and it's only about ten minutes from our houses.
Šibenik: Braavos again (season 5)
The square in front of St James's Cathedral also stood in for Braavos. Šibenik is just under an hour north and pairs well with a day at Krka National Park.
How to plan it
- Half a day: Kaštel Gomilica in the morning, Klis in the afternoon
- Full day: Split with the palace and cellars, then Žrnovnica or Klis on the way back
- With Krka: Šibenik and Krka together, Trogir in the evening
There are guided tours in Split, which are worth it mainly if you want every scene pinned down exactly. With a hire car or Uber it's easy to do on your own. Tips on driving are in Car hire and parking around Split.
And if after a day on castle walls you'd rather be in the water: all three villas have a heated pool and a hot tub. Villa Just be Alive, Villa Just be Light and Villa Just be Happy are all in Kaštel Stari.
