If you're looking for a villa in Trogir, you'll soon notice that there are no houses with a large garden, pool and parking in the old town itself – it sits on a small island, is car-free and densely built. That's why our three holiday villas aren't in Trogir but around 10 minutes' drive away in Kaštel Stari, halfway to Split. We say this right at the start because it's honest – and because for many guests, this very location is the real advantage.
Honest about the distance
| Destination | Distance from our villas |
|---|---|
| Trogir (UNESCO-listed old town) | approx. 10 min by car |
| Split Airport | approx. 10 min by car |
| Split centre | approx. 25 min by car |
| Kaštela beach & promenade | 10–15 min on foot (approx. 1 km) |
For trips to Trogir, Split and beyond, a car is useful. The beach, promenade, supermarket and restaurants in Kaštel Stari, on the other hand, are all within walking distance.
Why "in between" is often better than "in the middle"
- Peace in the evening: in summer Trogir is packed by day and lively in the evening. You enjoy the old town – and sleep on a quiet residential street.
- Space and a pool: your own heated saltwater pool (end of March to October), hot tub, outdoor kitchen with barbecue and a dining table for ten – things that simply don't exist in the old town.
- Parking without the hunt: private spaces right by the house (four at each villa) instead of hunting for a spot before the bridge.
- Two old towns, one base: Trogir and Split lie in opposite directions. From Kaštel Stari, both are equally easy to reach, without you having to move.
- Short transfer: Split Airport is in Kaštela itself – arrival and departure are quick.
A day in Trogir – how we'd plan it
The old town is small enough that a morning or an evening is enough. What matters is the time of day.
- Set off early (before 9am): you'll be there in a quarter of an hour. Park on the mainland before the bridge – you can't drive into the old town anyway.
- Market and fish hall: right by the bridge are the green market and the fish hall (ribarnica). They're at their liveliest in the morning – a good place to shop for the evening barbecue.
- Old-town loop: the Cathedral of St Lawrence with the Radovan Portal, the bell tower at around 47 metres high (the climb isn't for very small children), then on to Kamerlengo Fortress and back along the waterfront.
- Back to the villa at midday: between 12 and 4pm, the heat hangs between the stone walls. That's the time for the pool, the shade and a late lunch on the terrace.
- Optional in the evening: if you feel like it, head back once the day-trippers have gone – or stay put and grill the fish you bought that morning.
For a swim, many people carry on from Trogir to the island of Čiovo. The long pebble beach at Okrug Gornji is noisy and crowded in July and August; quieter, rocky coves lie further west. Who the location doesn't suit
If you want to stroll through Trogir's lanes on foot every evening without getting into a car, an apartment in the old town will suit you better. And if you don't want to drive at all: the beach, promenade and shopping are all walkable, but for Trogir you'll need a car, taxi or bus.
